Chapter 19 – Spear trap

-Wild Boar Lv3-

Health: 6/18
Mana: 3/4
Stamina: 4/9

“It’s weaker than the boar that I met before, I should steal its life before it dies.” I moved my roots to the boar but they didn’t reach. “I knew it, I made the hole too deep.” I said in frustration, but I knew that it needed to be deep or else the prey won’t be impaled.

I dug myself out of the ground with the help of the dig skill and moved closer to the hole. I stuck my roots into the wall that was inside it and took a bungee jump into my own trap. I stopped just above my spears, being pierced by them wouldn’t be that dangerous for me, but it still wouldn’t be pleasant, so I said, ”Next time I will root myself little higher.” And moved my roots into the open wounds of the pig.

As the roots entered the pig started to scream stronger and stronger from pain, not thinking about it much I just used my stealing life skill few times. The feeling of a hot soup of life poured through my roots returned yet again, I waited for this moment for really long time. It was the only feeling that somewhat resembled eating in this world for me and it was so good that I was little shaken after it finished.

*Experience reached the desired quantity “Ontopary bush” leveled up to Lv6*

“Yes, *Self Awareness*.” At last I made one step to getting stronger, so I checked how much my stats raised up immediately.

“Not enough I need more.” It wasn’t enough for me I needed to get stronger to not be bullied be the monsters inside this forest, even if I have ways to deal with them now, if they catch me in the open I will be doomed.

“The boar didn’t return my health back to full, I got one health from level up, so I only got two health from it, I need to find another prey fast.” As I finished thinking about it I looked up and said, “But for now I need to go back.” It was already late and surely the panther will not fall for this pathetic trap, so I left the sled and the trap as it is and went back to the tunnel.

I came back to the tunnel and started to hit the wall as every night, but today after hitting the wall for half an hour something unexpected happened, I got a new skill.

*Skill learned “Lesser Hand To Hand Combat”*

My eyes lit as two bright stars, “At last!” I screamed as I wanted to cry, I worked so much to get this skill and it took goddamn too long. “At least I got it, inspect *Lesser Hand To Hand Combat*.”

*Lesser Hand To Hand Mastery Lv1* – The beginning of the hand to hand combat tree, slightly increase the damage of the unarmed attacks of the user.

“That’s a really weak skill, but I guess it’s just a beginning.” Most likely the skill I got didn’t raise my combat ability at all, but it did encouraged me to work harder, so I continued hitting the wall with a faster pace until my stamina drained to two and went to sleep.

I woke up in the morning and now that I finished making my room and the storage room I didn’t really know what to do, so for the only purpose of training my digging skill, I started to dig a new tunnel through my room into the direction of the cliff. “Maybe I even get to the normal soil and won’t need to go outside to replenish my stamina.” I stated with confidence but then remembered that plants need sunlight as well, but I didn’t change my mind and started to dig.

I dug till half of my mana was exhausted, but the digging gave no fruits I still dug through Dried stone and no softer ground could be seen at all, it didn’t surprise me because I knew that I would need to dig quite far away to get where I wanted.

After that I just went to rest till noon, at noon I woke up went out of the tunnel to the direction of the trap, on my way I used my detection skill as usual. When I got to the trap I felt an aura coming from inside the hole, “Ah I forgot to remove the carcass of the boar…” Surely some other monster came because of the smell and fell down there.

“The hole got bigger.” I looked at the hole that was created by the boar, but now it was much bigger than before, looks like the monster stepped a little too close and fell in as the boar. I peeked down the hole and there I saw a wounded wolf, “How lucky!” The imaginary sinister smile came back again.

But just as the smile formed the wolf gazed at me with its terrifying yellow eyes, it reminded me of the panther. It startled me and got me completely by surprise, I stumbled few steps back and said to myself, “Calm down, it’s trapped and won’t get out.”

I gave the wolf another peek, the wolf had yellow eyes and his fur was metal black color, it gave the wolf really eerie look. His body were full of wounds, I could see a broken spear popping out of his back leg, because of that injury he had no chance of escaping the hole. All the spears around him were lying on the ground, somehow the wolf was only pierced by one of the spears, the other wounds most likely were made by something else.

“Hmm, how strange… Inspect *wolf*.” It got me little curious, but in the end, it didn’t matter so I just inspected him.

-Iron Fur Wolf Lv9-

Health: 26/56
Mana: 4/9
Stamina: 16/27

“Isn’t that a big catch?” The wolf was quite strong, it was little strange that it fell so easily into this trap. “maybe the wolf was chased by some other monster before that?” I tried to find an explanation, “It doesn’t matter, now it’s my prey.”

*Iron Fur Wolf* – Low tier monster, iron fur wolfs gets its name because of its sturdy black fur, the wolf mostly travels solo, but if an alpha wolf present could move in a pack. Really aggressive but intelligent as well, won’t try to engage in a reckless fight where it couldn’t win.

The wolf released a low growl, “Don’t take offense.” I said to him as I left to the dried tree to take more branches for the spears, on the way to there I took few Gravis stone debris to sharpen the spears.

I came back with six spears that I sharpen near the dried tree and stood up in front of the hole, “This time it should be easier to throw the spears.” This time I wasn’t confined between two walls so throwing a spear should be a piece of cake. I picked up the first spear, aimed at the wolf head and threw it.

The wolf saw the spear coming, moved a little to the side at a fast rate, the spear missed and was stuck inside the ground, “Even if he is injured he can move, not bad but this time it won’t be so easy.” I picked up another spear and this time I aimed at his body, using all of my strength I launched the spear.

The spear flew right at the wolf, there were barely enough space to dodge the first spear inside the cramped hole, so the second one was sure to hit its target and it did. “It hit.” I said with confidence, but suppressing the wolf only released a small growl and not even a single drop of blood could be seen from where the spear hit.

“What? Inspect *wolf*.” I didn’t understand why there was no wound where the spear collided, so I inspected the wolf and for my surprise, his health didn’t change at all. After hitting the wolf with the spear the wolf got angry and tried to jump out of the hole, but the hole was too deep and there were nothing he could do with a wounded leg.

“…” I was standing there speechless looking at the desperate wolf, I didn’t know why but it etched my heart seeing this sight. But after a moment of hesitation I said to myself, “No, it’s me or them.”

I returned to my senses and said, “Looks like the wolf fur defense is really high I need to make the spear sharper or it won’t work.” I looked at the spear that I was holding and without further ado, I went to grab some big leaves from a tree nearby.

I cut the leaves into strips as before, took the sharp piece Gravis stone that I brought here with me and started to attach it to the tip of the spear. After checking that it was tied solid onto the spear, I went back to the trap and got ready to throw it again.

The spear flew out of my small hands straight to the wolf’s body, the wolf released a small cry as the spear hit him and where it hit a wound could be seen. “Good that will do, inspect wolf.” I inspected the wolf to see the damage I did.

-Iron Fur Wolf Lv9-

Health: 24/56
Mana: 4/9
Stamina: 16/27

“Barely two… this will take some time.” I need to decrease the wolf health at least to eight or ten before I could try to steal its life, at this moment I was really happy that my body wasn’t made of flesh as the other monster, even with crazy damaged I could move as normal but not this wolf.

“I should make at least ten other spears.” With that number in mind I went to take the sled that was hidden in the bushes nearby, with it I went to pick up Gravis stones that would be used as tips for the spears and went to the dried up tree.

After an hour I came back to the trap with ten spears on the sled, all of the spears had a black tip to them that reflected the sun a little. I looked inside the trap to see the condition of the wolf, as the wolf saw me he growled in a low voice, currently he was eating the dead boar that was located near him.

“An animal always going to be an animal, anyway it’s time.” I said as I felt little bad for it, I took out the spears and started to launch them into the wolf, no matter how much the wolf struggled and tried to escape the upcoming spears he couldn’t do anything at all.

I missed the first spear but the second spear hit the target, after the second spear hitting the wolf it was really easy. I only missed with two spears and the other eight hit the target as intended. The wolf was lying on the ground motionless, now I could steal his life and put him out of his misery.

I got closer to the hole and rooted myself into the side of the wall. My roots slowly got closer to the wolf and entered its wounds, the wolf released his last weak cry as I drained it from its life. I felt the feeling of a thick hot soup that was pouring through my roots yet again, “So good, so tasty…” I mumbled with delight.

This time the feeling was much more richer than usual, “Is it because the monster is a lot stronger?” I asked myself in surprise, but I didn’t care much for that question and returned all of my focus to my roots to not miss even one second of this moment.

After barely a second of focusing something weird happened, suddenly a heavy feeling of death and dread fell upon me as if death itself was holding its scythe around my neck.

Fun fact: I love wolfs.
